Why should I buy from Ceramic Tattoo Art?
1.     VALUE: I handcraft each piece on the potter’s wheel and turn the wood lids on a lathe to custom fit each piece. Every piece is made with the utmost care, and I really put my heart and soul into each piece I create for you the customer.
2.     PRICE:  That means that the price you see on the screen is the price you pay. There are no hidden extras.
3.     QUALITY: All my work is made in the USA baby! We work with each of our customers to establish a personal relationship. That means I know and am acutely aware of handling your memorial urn and the importance of the person behind the order. I work extremely hard to ensure the purchase you make with us is of the highest quality and I pride myself in providing the most amazing experience of embracing your loved ones’ memory I can provide.
4.     SECURITY: We want you to know that the information you provide us with is safe. We will never sell your contact information.
5.     WE UNDERSTAND: I try my hardest to take into consideration that this is one of the hardest times in your life, the loss of a loved one. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge that you have memorialized your loved one in the best form you can. We want your experience with us to be positive and healing.

Can my memorial urn be personalized?
Your loved one’s urn can be personalized in many ways. Here are a few options:
  • Commissioned art. You are getting a piece of art that you can be proud to display in any home. I will work with you on the color, size, shape, and design of each piece so that it fits perfectly into your sacred space.
  • Engraved inscription. Many urns can be customized by me carving/tattooing onto the piece. You can also contact an engraver or someone that can professionally engrave your information on a brass plate or some other material.
  • Nameplatete. You can have a nameplate which can be affixed to an urn with a flat surface for example on the base of the wood lid and or base. I also can put your loved ones’ pictures in epoxy on top of the wood lid.
  • Separate plate. I can also make custom ceramic plates that have special inscriptions and or designs carved/tattooed onto them.
How does Cremation differ from traditional funeral services?
Cremation is a lot more inexpensive usually than traditional in-ground services. The cremation rate in the United States has been increasing steadily with the national average rate rising from 3.56% in 1960 to 53.1% in 2018 and projections from the Cremation Association of North America forecasting a rate of 59.4% in 2023.

Some people place their urn in a niche or decide to keep it at home. My intention is to create works of art that can be proudly displayed in one’s home. Some of my customers have placed the urn in the ground or in a niche after they received it. Some of my customers choose to scatter most of the ashes in a special spot and then keep some in the urn to be kept at home. There are no right or wrong answers to this and you should follow your heart in the direction it leads you. If you do that then you will be following your inner wisdom and will feel comfortable with your decision.

How much do urns typically cost?
Our urns start at $275.00 and go up to just under $1,000 depending on the complexity of the design, type of exotic wood, etc… You can expect to pay about $375+ in a funeral home for urns they have there. Usually, these urns are made in China and are very plain I have found. I love the fact that with us you can create a custom urn and design of your choice rather than relying on some run-of-the-mill type of urn.

What size cremation urn do I need?
The general rule of thumb is for every pound of the person's total weight you will need one cubic inch of space. So if a person weighed 150 lbs. you will need an urn that is 150 cubic inches or larger. I make my urns to be about on average 220 cubic inches. That works out to be about what a gallon of water could fit into. My urns usually have dimensions of about 8” high and 10” tall or around that. I do make all shapes and sizes so this will vary and can be totally customized to your exact specifications.

Are urns permanently sealed?
Some are and some are not. Again, no right or wrong answer here, and this is totally up to you. We suggest that you use Liquid Nails to seal our wood lids to the ceramic top. You can also use 2-part epoxy if you are looking for a stronger hold but this may be damaged if you decide at a later date to remove the lid.

Methods of Filling an Urn
You will need to make sure to keep the metal id tag that is in the bag with the remains. You will most likely transfer the remains from one bag that they are currently into a fresh bag that will be placed inside the urn itself. If you need assistance with doing this don’t hesitate to contact your local funeral home and most will be more than happy to help you.

Do I have to buy the urn from the funeral home?
Absolutely not, you can buy your urn anywhere you would like and the funeral home will by law assist you with it. There are all kinds of possibilities and other sources to buy from than a funeral home. I actually would not personally choose to ever purchase an urn from a funeral home because I know that most of the urns that are in stock are from China or another place other than the USA. I prefer to by American-made products and would much prefer buying a work of art rather than something that was mass produced.

Can I put other items inside the urn with the ashes?
Yes, personal items like wallets, letters, trinkets, or anything you would like can be added to the contents of the urn. A lot of people save a bit of the remains to put into jewelry that can be purchased from different artists. This is something I would do personally and have recommended my customers look on Etsy for cremation jewelry.

How to care for your ceramic urn
We recommend that you wipe your urn with a slightly damp cloth to clean the outer shell. You can also use orange oil or some other kind of wood oil for the lid and base of the piece. We include a little sample of the orange oil we use to finish the wood lids of the urns. The product is called Howard Orange Oil Wood Finish.

What is a companion urn?
A companion urn is designed for two people’s remains to be placed in the urn together. We can make companion urns with no problem at all because I hand throw each urn on the potter’s wheel and can make whatever size I need to. I would be happy to talk to you about how we can provide this.

Can I choose a human urn for pet ashes?
Yes, you can. No rules here but to follow your heart. They are often similar in size and shape. I always take the custom dimensions of your choice anyway. Some may like the design that I have carved/tattooed onto a piece that was meant for a pet and that is just fine.

My husband was over 400 lbs which is more than most individual urns will hold. What do I do?
If your loved one weighs more than what you think the urn will handle then by all means let me know and I can custom make a larger size urn with no problem at all. Since I throw each piece on the potter’s wheel it is not a problem to make a piece that is a bit larger to accommodate any need.

Can you ship my urn directly to the funeral home?
We sure can and would be happy to do this for you. Just give us the name and address of the funeral home you would like us to send it to with any other special instructions and we will be glad to assist you with this. We specialize in giving our customers the greatest service anywhere! We provide a high-end product that will be something that is a large part of your life and your family’s life hopefully for generations to come. We will do whatever is in our power to make the experience of customizing your own memorial urn for your loved one. We take the responsibility seriously and with the utmost reverence.
